Hurricane Chronicles RPG
If you enjoy the Naruto series, and enjoy creative and exciting community writing, look no further than the Hurricane Chronicles RPG!

With the roleplay just beginning, we'll hoping for some people to temporarily fill important character roles with non-playable-characters alongside their own player-characters. This includes not only one of the five Kage, but those of the minor countries, leaders in each village's ANBU divisions, and even one of the nine tailed beasts!

Why hello! This is your friendly neighborhood founder, Ketch, and I appreciate you not being frightened away by this overly-obnoxious theme and stopping by to find out more about this fledgling roleplay!

I started this forum by myself, and attempted to get the roleplay off of the ground with a hastily-assembled group of people. Due to real-life commitments, they were unable to stick around and …

THE
ULTIMATE GUIDE
TO THE
WORLD OF HURRICANE CHRONICLES
Click the embedded links for greater detail of each aspect of the roleplay.

The Universe
Hurricane Chronicles is set in a universe that is an alternate to the series. This means that none of the characters that exist in canon exist here. There are several canon elements included, everything from canon techniques and even the tailed beasts, but there are no canon-specific characters or clans here. The history of the universe itself is similar yet does not include any of these players within it.

For the most part, we work off of creativity and originality here.

Every member begins as a genin, fresh from the academy, and grows from there. This genin will be your player-character (PC) or primary-character. You may have as many non-playable-characters (NPC) as you like, but don't overdo it. These are to be used mainly for plot purposes. Anything too extreme will need to be justified.

Roleplaying
The stories you write can be about anything that you desire: your character spending the day training, honing their skills; exploring outside the village, and encountering anything the world may throw at them; walking down the street, and eating at their favorite diner with friends; going on a date with a love interest. Nearly anything you can conjure is available to you here.

All roleplaying at Hurricane Chronicles is done through narrative stories written in the third-person perspective, whether through individual writings or collaborations with other players.

More complex plots that have an affect on the RP universe as a whole may need approval. As a general rule, if you’re not 100% sure that your idea will work---stop and ask somebody! Do not write an entire story that’s over 5,000 words about finding the grave of the Rikudo Sennin and reviving him---because you will quickly find out that doesn’t work, that you’ll receive no points for the writing, and that you have wasted all that time and effort on something that has gotten you absolutely nothing.

Don’t damn yourself. Do not hesitate to ask someone about your ideas.

All writings are posted in the Hurricane Chronicles section. You can write as much as you like every week, and remember to include your word counts in every piece.

Grading
Each writing week---beginning on Sunday and ending Saturday night at 11:59 EST---these writings are graded for overall quality by your group grader. The points you receive are then added to your character’s stats, and posted in one of the weekly stats threads found in the Big Bingo Book section. A new stat thread will be created there for every writing week that passes.

For example, let’s say you write a story that has a total of 1,000 words. The grading scale for points is 500 for every 1,000 words you write; this means 500 points is the maximum grade you may receive for that writing, provided it receives a perfect grade.

You can also acquire bonuses that add to your base grade; the Consecutive Bonus is automatically awarded for those who write at least 1,000 words per week, which add +10% to your base grade. The person who grades you may also add bonus points based on how well you’ve done.

This process is repeated every week with your character growing in direct proportion to how much and, more importantly, how well you write.

Stats
As stated above, each player begins as a genin, fresh from the academy, and are allotted 1,000 Chakra to begin with. Chakra is split between its four subcategories: Bukijutsu, Taijutsu, Speed, and Strength. As points are accrued through writing, the user adds these points to Chakra and then splits them between the four subcategories attached to it as they desire. This goes the same for Chakra Control and its three subcategories: Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Kekkei Genkai.

Though, if you wish to have a focused character without these three categories in their arsenal, you’re free to do so.

Progress in each stat awards the player not only greater skill in each practice, but unlocks different abilities pertaining to the particular stat as well. Some techniques in HC require the player to meet one or more stat requirements in order to utilize them. Needless to say, choose wisely where you distribute your hard-earned points...

Because they cannot be freely rearranged after the fact.

Techniques
There are different types of techniques throughout the roleplay:

  1. General Techniques are readily available to you upon reaching a certain plateau in stats. All academy techniques are general techniques that every player begins with in their arsenal. Some of these, such as the Shadow Clone technique, require you to reach a plateau in two particular categories before they're available to you. These do not need to be equipped.

Acquiring chakra natures, sealing techniques, and summoning contracts apply to this class of techniques.

  2. Other techniques, referred to as Slotted Techniques, must be equipped manually by the player and comprise the majority of techniques found in the roleplay. Each slotted technique has a number of slots attached to it. This number is based on the technique's rank, with the rank being determined by the cost and overall power of the technique.

Furthermore, each stat has a number of available slots attached to it, which determines whether or not you have enough slots to equip a certain technique. For every 250 points in each subcategory of stats, you have 1 slot to use for equipping slotted techniques.

For example, Player B has a Genjutsu stat of 1,000, meaning he has 4 slots to use for Genjutsu techniques. All D-Rank techniques, regardless of type, cost 1 slot to equip. This means Player B can equip 4 D-Rank Genjutsu techniques. Or he can equip to C-Rank techniques, which cost 2 slots each and so on.

There are also different classes of slotted techniques, such as those that belong to a specific village or a specific clan or even a specific person. The number of personal slotted techniques available to each user is static, meaning if you want to create another technique and have created too many already, you've gotta get rid of an older one.

  3. Squad Techniques are techniques learned from the corps you belong to. These are medical and sensory and puppetry techniques, abilities that are unique to a group of people and provide the player with specialist capabilities. Every squad has a maximum of 4 techniques that can be learned by its members, and each requires the user to reach a certain plateau before learning the next. Only the best specialists will have learned all four.

These techniques occupy the Squad Techs slots that each player has available to them. You can choose not to join a corps, and retain the freedom of being an ordinary shinobi. It's all up to you.

  4. Feats are exceptional abilities that stand above the rest. These are incredibly powerful, either acting as the player's trump card or the core of their arsenal. Unlike any other type of technique, these special abilities can be more complex and versatile.

An example of a Feat from canon would be the second Tsuchikage's, Mu, ability to split his body/existence into two pieces. A number of different parameters can be applied to this that make it especially useful in combat.

Feats are gained through participation in worldwide plot events, and reaching higher ranks both in-game and out-of-game. A maximum of five Feats can be earned by any one player.

Ranks
Ranks work in much the same way as they do in canon. Beginning as a genin, the next step up would be chuunin, which can be acquired through participation in the Chuunin Exams or through referral for promotion. This is all based on both the tangible and intangible aspects of your character.

All power and no brains means a long stint below even tokubetsu. Believe it.

Missions and Ryo
Missions can be undertaken by your characters in order to gain experience, esteem and, of course, money. The amount of money you can earn varies per mission rank, and whether or not you receive the maximum amount of Ryo offered for the mission is judged in the same way as all writings are: by how well you performed.

If your job was to tail someone, and you get caught during your pursuit, that’s an obvious fail. This does not necessarily mean you don’t get any Ryo for your efforts---just, more than likely, not the maximum amount.

Every player starts with 1,000 Ryo---the salary for all genin. This minimum bank is used to purchase pouch items like kunai, shuriken, and the like. However much of these you equip cannot exceed your bank. For example, a Wire String spool costs 250 per spool. This means that, as a starting genin, you can have up to 4 since that would cost 1,000 Ryo.

Missions allow you to increase this bank, therefore increasing the amount of items you can have. You may also use this “excess” Ryo to purchase other things, like additional item pouches and the right to change one of your chakra natures. You may never go below your minimum bank, though, so spend whatever you earn wisely.

First thing you should do: read, read, and read. And, when you’ve done all that, skim over it again for good measure.

Not just the guideline threads but, to better understand the different techniques, review one’s that have been approved and those that haven’t in the Submissions section to get an idea of what does and doesn’t work in the system. To learn how fights are done, check out a few writings in the Hurricane Chronicles section where they occur. When things seem complicated, there are many different references around the site for you to use to figure out just how everything here plays out.

Once you’ve done all that, head over The Academy section to get the application form, strike up your own, and post it in the Registration section.
